Not many seem to have it. Even fewer seem to know they need it. Fewer still are willing to make the effort to seek it or even ask for it. This is tragically the situation when it comes to wisdom in today’s world. We need knowledge, but more than that, we need the understanding of how to use, or apply, that knowledge. This is wisdom.
As I have mentioned before in these posts, my newest book, The Proverbial Man is now available on Amazon. You can look into it with the link below. The book is a collection of Solomon’s Proverbs used as the basis for a year-long devotional for men. My goal for writing The Proverbial Man has been to alert men to the need for, and availability of, wisdom in our day.
But don’t limit yourself to Solomon’s ideas. James also write of wisdom in his New Testament epistle. Not only does he differentiate between heavenly wisdom and earthly, demonic wisdom but he also makes it clear that any man who recognizes need for wisdom merely has to ask God for it and it will be given “generously and without reproach”.
Let’s face it, today’s men can easily be inundated with information overload. We can so easily get caught up in wanting more information that we lose sight of the value of gaining wisdom instead of knowing more “stuff”. Broadly speaking, general knowledge is doubling approximately every 12-13 months today. That means we know around twice as much today as we did a year ago!
Ask yourself this: with the huge increases in knowledge has our world been improving? Do more facts make for better living conditions, higher standards of morality and human kindness? I don’t think so. What we are lacking while we amass higher and higher levels of knowledge is how best to apply it. As Solomon wrote his Proverbs he also wrote about understanding. By my count the word “understanding” is used only one time less than the word “wisdom” in Proverbs.
All of these are reasons I wrote The Proverbial Man. As an added bonus, I included 30 Days of Praise during the month of June, writing from 30 different Psalms and including suggested Praise and Worship songs. Why? Because there needs to be more Praise and Worship outside of the walls of our churches.
I hope you’ll give this a look. Reviews are appreciated. Let me know what you think!
Chuck
