I am currently working on my next book, which is a Men’s Devotional from the Book of Proverbs. The working title for it is THE PROVERBIAL MAN: Practical Wisdom For Today’s Man. I find that there is a wealth of information for men from the Book of Proverbs as Solomon gives these statements of teaching to his son in order to guide him onto the path of wisdom and away from foolishness.
Totally apart from my working on the book, my wife recently read this statement to me from some of her reading: “We are drowning in information while starving for wisdom” (from “Mindful Christianity” online). How true is that?! Nowadays we often hear about how information is multiplying exponentially. One approximation says that information doubles about every 12 months. Needless to say, humanity has more knowledge today than ever before and that knowledge keeps building, especially with the advent of Artificial Intelligence. No wonder we’re drowning in it!
A close friend of mine who has recently gone to be with the Lord shared a common saying with me through the years. Any time an unusual occurrence would come up we would look at each other and say, “There’s no such thing as coincidence!” We shared that thought because we both lived with the belief in the sovereignty of God. Hence, rather than situations being mere coincidence, we believed that God was, and still is, behind all things. Why do I bring this up? Because I don’t think my wife reading that phrase at the same time I am writing the book about Wisdom from the Bible was a coincidence. Divine appointment is more like it.
What are you drowning in? Too much information but too little wisdom? Too much time but too little discernment about how to use it? Too much spiritual fluff with too little Bible-based reality? Too much churchy legalism but too little grace? Too much marriage with too little love? Here’s what I want you to hear: there is a lifeline for you. Every drowning person needs a life saver tossed to him/her. Jesus said that if we ask we will receive; if we seek we will find; if we knock it will be opened to us. In whatever area of life you may feel like you are drowning, look to God for that lifeline. He will use others around you as His hands and feet. Be willing to receive assistance when it is offered. It might come from unexpected sources.
